William Fryer MA Oxon – Technical director of Megahome Distillers UK Explains The Journey Of Megahome Water Distillers

by William Fryer MA Oxon, Technical director of Megahome Distillers UK

Alan has kindly asked me to write an article for the Genesis Healing newsletter and I thought I would share my own distilled water journey because I think it echos what most people go through.

I have a sensitive palate and it has always troubled me that I didn’t really like the taste of tap water. I live in Wiltshire and our water comes from underground aquifer. It is very hard water but generally speaking I am not drawn to drink it. I don’t drink tea and coffee so I used to drink a lot of squash, then I got concerned about the amount of sugar I was ingesting and I’m not a fan of artificial sweeteners.

In the late 20s I was woken at night by an incredible pain in my abdomen. I thought I might have a burst appendix or something. I went to hospital and the doctor said I probably had a kidney stone. He gave me some naproxen and told me to drink a lot of water. He also said they were “as common as muck round here because it’s a hard water area”. The pain eased over the next few days.

It was probably about ten years later that I came across water distillers. At that time Megahome were the only ones available. On my first distillation I was shocked. I had expected a lot of scale. That’s the white stuff that gets left in kettles but what I was not prepared for was the yellow liquid on top that smells like emulsion paint. I simply don’t like the idea that I am putting this stuff into my body. And no, I have never done a chemical analysis of it.

Water Distiller

When I first tasted distilled water I actually didn’t like it. It tasted odd. So I put it in the fridge because I could tolerate the taste cold. Over a week or so I got used to it. In fact now distilled water tastes fresh and clean and tap water tastes dirty. What is interesting is my kids’ reaction to distilled water.

My kids used to really complain about being given tap water with dinner. Kids have much more sensitive palates that adults. But distilled water that have no problem with at all. In fact it is their preferred drink.

I know a lot of people want to talk about specific health benefits like clearer skin or feeling more positive or less joint pain Or even helping fight cancer. I’m personally not into that because I think it is very difficult to prove scientifically. The reason what I drink distilled water is fundamentally because I do not want to be putting the cr@p that gets left in the bottom of a distiller into my body. I also find that I tend to hydrate better, mainly because I have access to water I like the taste of. I actually prefer it at room temperature now.

People often do a lot of research before they buy a distiller. There are scare stories on the Internet about how distilled water lacks minerals or can leach minerals from your body. Both of these ideas are what I refer to as Non-science, they sound plausible but have no scientific basis. Taking the minerals issue first. Tap water does contain small amounts of sodium and calcium and tiny amounts of potassium all of which are removed by distillation. However water simply does not work as a source of minerals, we get minerals from food not water. Turning to the leaching issue. Minerals in bones are tied up in complex molecules, for example Calcium is combined with vitamin D to form Hypoxyapatite. If you dumped a bone in a bucket of distilled water it would not release its calcium. Drinking distilled water has no effect on blood chemistry. People who make these claims are always unable to explain biologically/biochemically how they actually happen.

I have been drinking distilled water now for about 19 years with no ill effects. My children have been brought up on it and are all healthy teenagers now. I think one of them has required antibiotics once and that is about it.

It can feel like a big step, drinking distilled water and it does require a level of commitment because you have to clean the distiller out each time. But in my experience it is worth it. It is also a lot cheaper and healthier than bottled water. All bottled water that comes in plastic bottles contains micro-plastics which are impossible to remove from your body. They simply accumulate. And the cost of electricity means a litre of distilled water costs about 12p.

Try it. Give it two weeks and then try some tap water; you will discover just how disgusting tap water really is.
